Joseph James Maw
Having delved into maritime and navigation studies from a young age, Joe redirected his course, leaving school at 16 to pursue artistic interests. Attending various art and design colleges in London, he earned qualifications in graphic design, typography and photography by the age of 18.
Despite the shift, Joe maintained ties to the maritime sector, apprenticing as a Waterman with “The Company Of Watermen & Lightermen” in the City of London. Transitioning into a career on the River Thames, he evolved from deck crew to a qualified high-speed ferry captain. Accredited by the Maritime Coast Guard Agency, Joe now manages, teaches, and examines apprentices in the field.
Driven by a passion for cityscape photography, maritime, and aviation, Joe acquired his first professional drone in late 2019. After experimenting with smaller UAVs for leisure and photography, he explored the burgeoning market for remote aerial systems. Joe pursued qualifications for professional UAV operations, becoming a certified commercial remote pilot with permissions from the Civil Aviation Authority.
Expanding his fleet and leveraging experience in photography, cinematography, and graphic design, Joe founded "London Drone Works."
